Een oog in zee (An eye in sea) – poetic musical theater about power, manipulation and courage

An evening in two parts: 18th and 21st century – Haydn and Boogman – the first concertant and the second full-on musical theater – a traditional, abandoned, grieving Ariadne on Naxos and a courageous, belligerent whistle-blower Ariadne who makes her own plan.

The myth of Ariadne and Theseus has been told in as many ways through the ages as there have been writers. We, too, retell this myth. The Ariadne we present is a modern whistle-blower: a traitor to a good cause. In our version, the Minotaur does not exist: King Minos knows the power of myths and uses the myth of the monster in the labyrinth to keep his people under control. Ariadne wants to bring this truth to light with the help of Theseus, so that she can go to Athens with Theseus and thus escape persecution in her homeland. Eventually she finds out that Theseus too is only busy with his own myth-making. Wanting to return to Athens as a hero, Theseus pretends to have defeated a non-existent monster.

In essence, Een oog in zee is a story about how stories are told. About how myths are used and abused. About how real people become victims of shadowy fabrications. The life of the Cretans is dominated by a myth: the Minotaur. Theseus is afraid not to be seen as a hero, and Ariadne fights valiantly for her truth but is also afraid, afraid to live an exile between her father's lie and her lover's lie.
The only character who feels at home with all the entanglements and emotions is Dionysos. But what game is he playing in this?

Een oog in zee - premiere in November Music Festival

Flyer_Een oog in zee kopie
Een oog in zee [An eye in the sea] will premiere on November 5, 2022 during the November Music Festival in Den Bosch. See: concerts.
It is music theater in which a present-day version of the myth of Ariadne and Theseus is presented. Salomé Roodenburg's libretto tells the story from Ariadne's perspective as an ›eye‹ on the truth ›in a sea‹ of lies and manipulations with which some rulers impose their will on the people. Een oog in zee also offers a surprising context for Haydn's cantata Arianna a Naxos, which is integrated in Willem Boogman's new composition.

The role of Ariadne is sung by mezzo-soprano Helena van Heel. The roles of Theseus and Dionysos are played, without text, by horn player Fokke van Heel and accordionist Vincent van Amsterdam respectively. Dancer Kenzo Kusuda adds an extra dimension that – translated into movement – expresses the space and feeling of Ariadne. By making the composition almost visible, he guides the audience through the story.

In the direction of Zephyr Brüggen and the scenography by Salomé Roodenburg, the boundaries between what is true and what is not, are blurred. This world of shadows is designed with canvases with paintings by Roodenburg and a light design that can create shadows and projections. Ariadne shows us that the Minotaur is an invention to oppress the people by fear, but on the other hand, can we trust her blindly?

From Scratch I ›Plain Dust‹ in Amsterdam

I am writing a series of compositions based on the working method of visual artist Alexandra Roozen. The Ives Ensemble recently played the first part on November Music and soon in Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ, Amsterdam. This part, scored for flute, clarinet, trombone, violin, viola, cello and percussion, refers to the series of drawings entitled ›Plain Dust‹ by Alexandra Roozen.

Premiere From Scratch I ›Plain Dust‹

from scratch_part I

Unfortunately Lunatree, that multifaceted and inspiring ensemble, stops. The intention and commitment of the founders, Anthony Fiumara and Arnold Marinissen, appealed to me very much. At the farewell concert Lunatree plays, among other things, my composition Ihr Tore. Modulationes super Cantatam BWV 193 : a completed and ›modulated‹ cantata by Bach that I wrote especially for the ensemble (for soprano, alto, violin, cello, clarinet, piano, percussion and drones).

Intermezzi (Reprises)

In a special program of the Asko Kamerkoor three of my compositions will be performed: Genieting V for accordion, Genieting II for extended vibraphone and Nous le chant III, a scenic concert for mixed choir, performer, accordion, organ & samples.

Intermezzi

Modulationes super Passionem secundum Joannem.

ASKO-DOORLOOP-INTERNET-90 kopie

Sternenrest in Festival Musica Sacra

The eighth performance of Sternenrest will take place on September 20, 2014, 22:00 during the Festival Musica Sacra Maastricht.

Sternenrest fits perfectly into the theme of this year's festival: awe-inspiring!
›How is it that, through the workings of our brain, we can form a picture of our actions and our place in the immeasurable cosmos? The fact that we are increasingly better equipped to chart that cosmos, macro and micro, does little to diminish our realisation that we are only a tiny part of an overwhelmingly large universe.‹

Again the performers are Olaf Tarenkeen - electric guitar, Arnold Marinissen - percussion of glass and Spectra Ensemble. Sound direction by Casper Schipper.

I'm really looking forward to the performance in this beautiful context!

Raving, first performance

February 1, 2014 | 14:15
Concertgebouw, Amsterdam
Radio Filharmonisch Orkest
Reinbert de Leeuw - conductor
NTR ZaterdagMatinee & broadcast by NTR/AVRO/TROS

Raving is inspired by Electronic Dance Music and ›raves‹: events where thousands of people gather to dance to music. That people gather around music, as at raves and also when listening to concert music, somehow has a moving aspect for me. And that is among other things what Raving is about.
Raving is not primarily intended to dance to. Yet Raving is also about dancing. On the one hand in Electronic Dance Music the endless, electronic pulse evokes the frenzy of dancing, on the other hand it keeps the dance in check by its regularity. Thus the deepest human impulses reveal themselves in the lightness of dance. This is celebrated in Raving, without forgetting the loner among the crowd.

Raving_flyer_eng_72
flyer by Sandra Macrander

After the successful music I wrote for theater company WARNS last year I was again invited to write incidental music for their performances of Edward Albee's play The Lady from Dubuque [De dame uit de provincie] this year.
This time I composed a ballad to be sung by the actress Marieken van Nieuwpoort as an intermezzo between the acts, as well as introductory music to the play itself.

The scoring is for jazz ensemble (alto sax, muted trumpet, electric guitar, piano, electric organ, bass and drums), which fits the mood of the play.
The ballad (›No Time to be Afraid‹) is for voice and piano.

The performances were at June 15 and 16 (20:30 p.m.), June 17 (15:00 p.m.) and the upcoming performances are at October 3, 4 and 5 (20:30 p.m.)

One Noon, first performance

First performance of ›One Noon‹ for six percussionists by CIRCUS S.
›One Noon‹ is about twelve o’clock midday, when the sun is at its highest point and situated due south. At noon the world is at the centre of full daylight.
The blazing sun in the sky, the shadows on earth, the refections and sparkles, the clouds passing in front of the sun, all caused me to deploy exclusively metal instruments for this celebration of noon.
The percussionists are placed around the audience, making the sound rotation audible.
I am very much looking forward to the premiere by the six percussionists of CIRCUS S in their circus tent. On May 5, 11:30 a.m. in Hannover.

First performance of De Dag Daagt [The Day Dawns] for organ

Premiere: April 14, 2012 | 20:15
Orgelpark, Amsterdam
De Dag Daagt
[flyer: Sandra Macrander]

The subject of De Dag Daagt for (pipe) organ is the morning twilight, during which night turns into day. At that point the sun is still beneath the horizon, and the nearer it approaches the horizon, the lighter the sky becomes, and the stars are extinguished. We are able to discern more and more of our surroundings, which appear like »a ceremony,« as Wislawa Szymborska so beautifully puts it in her poem Early Hour [Wczesna godzina].
The music concludes at the moment that the first ray of sunshine reaches the earth directly.

Day Daily – The Hours

First performances of The Hours 13-17, part of the cycle Day Daily, in November 2010

Day Daily - The Hours [Dag Dagelijks – De Uren] is a cycle of twenty-four one-minute pieces which represents the hours of the day.
The cycle is written for and dedicated to f.c. jongbloed, an ensemble of the Fontys Conservatorium in Tilburg, conducted by Arnold Marinissen.

After beautiful performances of the two preceding sets, f.c. jongbloed will premiere the third set, The Hours 13-17, on November 4, 10 and 25, 2010. See agenda
The afternoon hours were scored for clarinet (Evelien de Vries), alto saxophone (Peter Leung), violin (Diana Biazarti) and cello (Cor Coppoolse).

For the first time the optional electronic pulses can be heard that accompanies the instrumental music. The pulses were made with »tee-een«, a Max / MSP patch, initially designed for Sternenrest by
Johan van Kreij. The basic ingredients of the patch are the six frequencies of the star HD 129929. Consequently this star will be secretly present during daytime. Which obviously is not in contradiction with reality.

The picture shows the
cover of the cd which marks the 5th anniversary of f.c. jongbloed. The cd includes the ›live & unedited‹ recording of The Hours 19-22, and was presented at the November Music Festival 2010.

Sternenrest in huddersfield
