program notes

›wonen is het Westen‹ (home is the West), is a contemplation as evening falls, during sunset and dusk. This is the time when you experience intensely how day turns into night, and what that does to you. Such a transitional phase summons up a desire without the expectation of an outcome. You do nonetheless feel in some way at home.

The title is derived from an entry in the journal of the poetess Vasalis in which she wonders where she will find peace, now that anxieties about life are plaguing her. It would seem that the peace (›wonen‹ | home) she seeks is to be found in the West where she comes from but doesn’t presently live.

›wonen is het Westen‹ is the transitional music for the evening from the cycle ›Dag dagelijks‹ (Day Daily). It completes this cycle, which comprises twenty-four compositions in various configurations which represent the twenty-four hours of the day. The music depicts the gradual changes in the light and the passing of time over a twenty-four hour period.

Although somewhat concealed, the opening music of Bach’s cantata ›Bleib bei uns, denn es will Abend werden‹ can be heard in >wonen is het Westen<. This title also serves as the motto of the piece.

toelichting

Day Daily – the cycle

The cycle Day Daily forms a network of compositions and sub-cycles such as Nous le chant and Day Daily – The Hours.
Day Daily consists of four sections composed for the transitional moments in the day: midnight (Nous le chant I & II), the break of day (De dag daagt for organ,) midday (One Noon for six percussionists) and nightfall (»wonen is het Westen« for small ensemble).
These transitional moments are bound together by twenty short one-minute pieces from the cycle Day Daily - The Hours. Together these represent the twenty-four hours of the day.
All the sections may be performed separately.
