Sternenrest in Festival Musica Sacra

The eighth performance of Sternenrest will take place on September 20, 2014, 22:00 during the Festival Musica Sacra Maastricht.

Sternenrest fits perfectly into the theme of this year's festival: awe-inspiring!
›How is it that, through the workings of our brain, we can form a picture of our actions and our place in the immeasurable cosmos? The fact that we are increasingly better equipped to chart that cosmos, macro and micro, does little to diminish our realisation that we are only a tiny part of an overwhelmingly large universe.‹

Again the performers are Olaf Tarenkeen - electric guitar, Arnold Marinissen - percussion of glass and Spectra Ensemble. Sound direction by Casper Schipper.

I'm really looking forward to the performance in this beautiful context!

Day Daily - The Hours

Zie werkenlijst.

Day Daily – The Hours

First performances of The Hours 13-17, part of the cycle Day Daily, in November 2010

Day Daily - The Hours [Dag Dagelijks – De Uren] is a cycle of twenty-four one-minute pieces which represents the hours of the day.
The cycle is written for and dedicated to f.c. jongbloed, an ensemble of the Fontys Conservatorium in Tilburg, conducted by Arnold Marinissen.

After beautiful performances of the two preceding sets, f.c. jongbloed will premiere the third set, The Hours 13-17, on November 4, 10 and 25, 2010. See agenda
The afternoon hours were scored for clarinet (Evelien de Vries), alto saxophone (Peter Leung), violin (Diana Biazarti) and cello (Cor Coppoolse).

For the first time the optional electronic pulses can be heard that accompanies the instrumental music. The pulses were made with »tee-een«, a Max / MSP patch, initially designed for Sternenrest by
Johan van Kreij. The basic ingredients of the patch are the six frequencies of the star HD 129929. Consequently this star will be secretly present during daytime. Which obviously is not in contradiction with reality.

The picture shows the
cover of the cd which marks the 5th anniversary of f.c. jongbloed. The cd includes the ›live & unedited‹ recording of The Hours 19-22, and was presented at the November Music Festival 2010.

De Dag Daagt

the hours 19-23
Twilight: a liminal stage

The part of the cycle ›Day Daily‹ that was composed first was the midnight music Nous le chant I & II (2009).
Then the five hours of the evening
Day Daily – The Hours 19-23 were completed and performed in November 2009. I couldn't finish ›Hour 23‹ in time for the performance, and that's why you will not find the recording of this one-minute piece on this website.
In March 2010 the nocturnal hours
Day Daily – The Hours 1-5 were completed and performed.
Currently I am working on the music that deals with the morning twilight, the time between dawn and sunrise. It is entitled ›De Dag Daagt‹ [The Day Dawns] and is a composition for pipe organ commissioned by Johan Luijmes, artistic director of the Orgelpark in Amsterdam.
The afternoon hours 13-17 are scheduled for the autumn, and the morning hours 7-11 for the spring 2011. Both sets, each of them with an unique scoring, will again be performed by f.c. jongbloed & Arnold Marinissen - conductor.

For an overview of the cycle on which I will also be working the coming years, see:
Day Daily (weblog category: work in progress)

Recently the book entitled ›Sluiproutes en dwaalwegen‹ [Shortcuts and false scents] (1991) by Anthony Mertens impressed me very much. It deals with liminal poetics and it gives an excellent overview and definitions of liminality, a concept that perhaps best characterizes my music. The adjective ›liminal‹ derives from the Latin name for threshold, ›limen‹. Twilight is a typical example of a liminal stage of the day. I will write more about this issue in this weblog.

Day Daily - The Hours

The Hours 18-23

Sternenrest in huddersfield
