This fall, I began work on the third and final part of the From Scratch Cycle. From Scratch is based on drawings by visual artist Alexandra Roozen. As the title suggests, I'm building the music from the ground up, closely following Roozen's working method rather than the feelings her work evokes in me.
The first part of the cycle, From Scratch I, ›Plain Dust‹ & ›Trills‹, was performed in 2019 by the Ives Ensemble at the November Music Festival and the Muziekgebouw, Amsterdam.
From Scratch II, ›Seen by Hand‹, was completed in 2020 but not performed due to the coronavirus epidemic.
In 2013, Alexandra exhibited the series of drawings ›Traces‹ in Seoul, which is based on the instructions for the musicians in the score of From Scratch I.
For From Scratch III, I'm basing my work on her most recent series of drawings: ›Surround‹ & ›Black Ice‹, a glimpse of which can be seen in the photo (Gallery Roger Katwijk).

I am writing a series of compositions based on the working method of visual artist Alexandra Roozen. The Ives Ensemble recently played the first part on November Music and soon in Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ, Amsterdam. This part, scored for flute, clarinet, trombone, violin, viola, cello and percussion, refers to the series of drawings entitled ›Plain Dust‹ by Alexandra Roozen.

Op zaterdag 9 november speelt het Ives Ensemble in November Music 2019 (Willem Twee Toonzaal) het 13 minuten durende eerste deel van From Scratch (wereldpremière), een uiteindelijk driedelige compositie die gebaseerd is op de werkwijze van beeldend kunstenaar Alexandra Roozen. Alexandra creëert vanuit minimale potloodstreepjes grootse en betekenisvolle structuren, een proces dat bij mij een equivalent krijgt in de ontwikkeling van vele korte motiefjes versus langzaam groeiende lange klankduren. Ik wil de verschillende manieren waarop tijd ervaren wordt vatten in één compositie, zoals Alexandra's werk ook vanuit verschillende perspectieven - van grotere afstand en van dichtbij - bekeken kan worden. Voorafgaand aan deze première zal Seen by Hand te zien zijn, een korte film over de werkwijze van Alexandra, waarin ook de geluiden van het tekenen een belangrijke rol spelen. De foto toont een onderdeel van mijn werkproces, waarin ik stukjes uit een detailfoto van Alexandra's werk heb losgeknipt om reeksen figuurtjes te bestuderen en hun ontwikkelingen.
